A series of documents helps to define the history of the genesis of an eighteenth-century church façade in Sicily: the church of San Giovanni in Vizzini. The history reveals a constant change of intentions and an empirical approach where, without necessarily proceeding to demolish the already built, the project is subjected to continuous revisions and additions. The process therefore reveals a radical alternative to the idea of an orderly succession between drawing and execution.

Abstract Present work deals with the topic of building integration of solar thermal collector (BIST) as a refurbishment measure. Such equipment, more than its main function as heating generator, plays a specific role as a building component (envelope finishes, thermal insulation layer, roof cover etc). Consequently, from a heat transfer point of view, an integrated component affects twice the global building balance: supporting the thermal plant (i.e. providing heat for final uses) and modifying the wall heat-transfer pattern (i.e. reducing thermal losses). Dopo avere richiamato l’estesa vicenda storica della costruzione della chiesa Madre di Santa Maria delle Stelle a Comiso, iniziata nel 1736 e terminata due secoli dopo, il contributo è focalizzato sul tema del completamento della sua facciata con l’uso della struttura intelaia di calcestruzzo di cemento armato, progettata dall’ingegnere Santoro Secolo. In tempi più recenti, alcuni dissesti improvvisi hanno posto in evidenza il tema del rischio e la necessità di interventi per risanare la struttura architettonica. L’importanza del monitoraggio e della manutenzione, intesi come fondamentali strategie di conservazione, concludono l’articolo.
Flexural behaviour of glass panels under dead load and uniform lateral pressure

Abstract In the present paper the experimental results relative to flexural tests on out-of-plane loaded large scale panels made of laminated structural glass are presented and discussed. Glass panels are parts of the structural facade of the Fontanarossa International Airport of Catania (Italy). Panels are mounted on a rigid testing frame and loaded with an uniformly distributed lateral pressure. The Bell-Tower Facade: An Aseismic Device in Sicily Between the 12th and 18th Centuries

Imposing tower facades with belfries in the last order were built in Sicily Italy, from the Middle Ages to the late Baroque period. Until the 16th century, this model, which was inspired by northern European examples, also had a parallelepiped forepart leaning against the facade, working as containment for the pressure imparted by the inner longitudinal arches on the front, and amplified in case of earthquakes. The lacking static efficiency of these early structures is demonstrated by collapses during the strong earthquakes that hit the island in the modern age. The paper analyses the debate in Sicily on the construction of the monumental colonnaded porticoes that characterise the facades of public edifices built on the island from the post- Unification period to the Fascist regime. The pronao of the Massimo Theatre in Palermo (from 1875) marks the climax of a cultural movement, which, for almost a century, was to associate the neo-Greek style with public buildings and the material of choice of Sicily’s church building tradition in a deterministic manner.
